Extraterrestrials come in peace; or at least, that is what Apollo 14 veteran Edgar Mitchell would have us believe. According to Mitchell, aliens came to Earth to prevent a brewing nuclear war between the United States and Russia.

Mitchell is known to be the sixth man to walk on the surface of the moon; and since his return, he has been outspoken about the reality of alien life. Given his background and experience, it should not come as a surprise that he has become one of the most renowned talking heads in the UFO community.

The astronaut recently told Mirror Online that military insiders reported seeing strange flying objects fleeting across U.S. missile bases and the White Sands Facility in New Mexico, the landmark of the first nuclear bomb to be detonated in 1945.

Aliens shoot down and disable missiles

“They wanted to know about our military capabilities,” said Mitchell. “My own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth.”

Mitchell was raised near the Roswell site in New Mexico and is more familiar with the area than most people. He reports that a number of Air Force officers told him UFOs were commonplace at the Roswell site during the Cold War, and that they often defused weapons.

“They told me UFOs were frequently seen overhead and often disabled their missiles,” Mitchell continued. “Other officers from bases on the Pacific coast told me their (test) missiles were frequently shot down by alien spacecraft.”

Anecdotal hearsay or truth?

Others are understandably skeptical about Mitchell’s claims. Nick Pope, a former Ministry of Defense UFO researcher, for example, noted that Mitchell is an honorable man, but that his anecdotal claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

Most of Mitchell’s remarks are said to be based on hearsay. However, considering that he worked at the top and most secret levels of government, some of his claims might have actually come from reputable government experts. For this reason, he has always refused to disclose the sources who allegedly testified to the reality of UFOs.

“There have certainly been some intriguing UFO sightings around nuclear facilities, and around military bases more generally, but an alternative explanation is that some of these sightings are attributable to espionage activity involving secret spy planes or drones,” remarked Pope in an interview with Mirror.

Mitchell’s theory may sound like science fiction to some people. Nevertheless, the idea that intelligent extraterrestrials exist isn’t much of a stretch. According to the Fermi Paradox, there has been more than enough time in the history of the universe for an advanced civilization to colonize the galaxy over and over. What is a stretch is whether extraterrestrials have meddled in human affairs.

“Given that the Universe is around 14 billion years old, if we’re being visited, it’s unlikely we’re dealing with a civilization just a few hundred years ahead of us, so stories of aliens managing to disrupt a few of our weapons tests are far-fetched. Chances are they’d be millions of years ahead of us and could do anything they wanted to,” said Pope.

Whether it was John F. Kennedy or UFOs, we can thank our lucky stars that a nuclear war did not transpire between the United States and Russia. Whether those lucky stars were Earth-bound or from far beyond, however, remains a mystery.
